Home Extension for a Growing Family

Home Extension For A Growing Family

The Foschiatti family needed to extend the house for a growing family. The family was very settled in their neighbourhood and was therefore very reluctant to move.

Before Total Lifestyle Renovation

They came to Total Lifestyle Builders wanting a solution to their problem. The primary consideration was to create a bedroom zone upstairs and a living zone downstairs. This meant a complete redesign of their entire home to incorporate the new extension while creating a large, open and airy living space where there had previously been a collection of small bedrooms.

The Process

A major consideration in any home extension is how the current house sits on the block and where the extension should best be placed.  As the Foschiatti’s home is located on a busy street in Tingalpa and being positioned close to the front boundary, it made sense to push the extension up and out towards the back of the house.  This plan helped to create an outdoor entertaining area while regaining some peace and quiet for the bedrooms.

Indoor Outdoor Living

Downstairs was completely opened up to create a spacious open-plan living and entertainment area overlooking the patio, pool and garden.  A large door was fitted, bringing the outdoors in and providing the family an easy transition from indoors to outdoors, making the most of all entertaining spaces.

Another important aspect of the downstairs redesign was to effectively utilise previous “dead zones” (ie. areas with limited functionality).  Behind the stairs and around the carport were developed into additional storage space, an essential for any growing family.

Abundance of Light

The new stairs and upstairs landing were needing to serve a number of functions.  They have been used to divide the upstairs bedroom zone into two separate spaces, one for the kids and a parents’ retreat giving greater privacy for Mum and Dad.  As well as this, the large, open stairwell brings in an abundance of natural light into the downstairs living areas, converting what could easily be dark and dingy into a beautifully spacious kitchen and living room.

Repecting Architectural Details

The attention to detail and finishes outside are just as important as on the inside.  The architectural design for the extension drew on key features of the existing home, the bay window and breezy front porch.  By mirroring the bay window on the second floor and designing wide eaves, the new extension remains sympathetic to the original building while the fresh render and new roofing provide it with a thoroughly modern look.

And the result…

“The extension has made a huge difference to our lives. We are no longer living on top of each other. We spent six years with only one toilet, which was definitely a challenge. We also love the area and didn’t want to leave, but nothing else in the area really suited. We now have a house that suites our needs perfectly in an area that we love. From a cost perspective, it was a lot cheaper than moving too. The construction team was fantastic. We were a bit worried with time frames getting blown out, but the team was approachable, extremely hard working and generally speaking a great bunch of guys… And the project was actually finished early.”
